Blake Sterling MD, fresh out of residency, joins the Pulmonary Associates, a three-man specialty group affiliated with the Flintridge Medical Center. Within a month of entering private practice, Blake is called to consult on the first of seven patients with atypical pneumonia. He soon establishes that his patients have been infected with bocavirus, a recently discovered virus that normally causes only mild symptoms. Blake's patients, however, are more severely ill than expected, and each is sicker than the one before, to the point that two patients die from their infections. Driven to solve the mystery that confronts him, Blake suspects that the bocavirus is being genetically engineered for use as a biological weapon. As he draws closer to learning the truth, he is opposed by members of the New World Militia, the clandestine paramilitary group intent upon turning the virus into a weapon of war. The Militia's members are strategically positioned to oppose Blake. Marcus Eldridge, Flintridge Healthcare's Chief Administrative Officer, Tyler Wickham, one of the hospital's Senior Respiratory Therapists; and Jerry Tucker MD, one of Blake's new partners at Pulmonary Associates are determined to derail his investigation. Unable to deter Blake, Tyler manages to secretly infect Blake with the virus. Blake's life hangs by a thread. Will his deeply rooted Christian faith, and the extraordinary efforts of Madison Lane, the ICU nurse in whom he has a romantic interest save him? Join Blake as he fights to expose the Militia and eradicate the bocavirus.
