PAUL MERRIL SPURLIN (1902-94) was a historian who wrote multiple books on romance languages and literature and their intersection with American history, including Rousseau in America, 1760-1809 and Montesquieu in America, 1760-1801. MAURIZIO VALSANIA is professor of American history at the University of Turin, Italy. He is the author of The Limits of Optimism: Thomas Jefferson's Dualistic Enlightenment and Jefferson's Body: A Corporeal Biography.
