Kamituga is a mining center and an important communications hub on the RN2 national road, and is the economic pool of the western part of South Kivu province, comprising the territories of Mwenga and Shabunda, with over 1,500,000 inhabitants. The development of Kamituga as a regional center has a major impact on the development of its rural periphery in the Mwenga and Shabunda territories. The urban center of Kamituga is a major consumer center for products from Mwenga and Shabunda. The Mungombe hydroelectric dam on the RuZizi river, 15 km away, supplies the town with electricity. Kamituga is one of the largest mining towns in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
