This is an omnibus edition consisting of the three stories in the Ghost and Detective McNab series with all being set in modern day Edinburgh, Scotland. A Misplaced Body introduces the young Probationary Detective Constable Hamish McNab who is sent on his first case to investigate a body which has been found in the lecture room at the Old Medical School. When he arrives, the body is missing but he is unexpectedly befriended by the ghost of a former lecturer at the school, Dr. Joseph Bell, an authority on deductive reasoning and forensic medicine and the once the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous fictional private detective. Together, the ghostly Bell and the young detective solve the case of the misplaced body and bring the murderer to justice. The Lone Piper - the body of a dead army officer is found at the base of the walls of Edinburgh Castle. McNab is perplexed because the officer, the Adjutant of the Army Reserve unit on temporary duty garrisoning Edinburgh Castle, was last seen with his battalion in St Giles' Cathedral during their formal Church Parade some distance away. McNab and Bell can only solve the crime and find out where, when and how the Adjutant was killed by remembering the old legend about the phantom lone piper of the castle. The Dragon's Tooth - McNab is called to the National Museum of Scotland in the middle of the night where the Nightwatchman has found the body of one of the staff apparently killed by 'a dragon'. When McNab arrives, he finds the body with multiple teeth marks in its chest lying beneath the open jaws of the exhibited skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex. How the victim was killed, what was the motive and what part did the dinosaur play in the murder becomes a complex series of deductions from McNab and his ghostly friend Dr. Bell.
