Separately, British and French engineers have built nuclear fusion powered spacecraft to cut the Mars rocket journey time from eight months to five days. British test flights have suffered alien interference originating from the Langrange Points stationery on the Earth's orbit, but a test flight to the Martian orbit was successful. In 2045 the sun's surface erupts, devastating all electrical power supplies, cables, machines, satellites and all renewable wind and solar generators. The Earth's crust weakens. Volcanoes explode. Ash covers the Earth. Food, water and transport cease. The Gleissberg Extinction has begun.

Autorenporträt
The author is grammar school educated in science subjects but was taught English by a domineering headmistress. He holds a doctorate in aeronautical engineering and is a chartered engineer. After serving a five-year student apprenticeship at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, he held management positions at Rolls Royce, Central Electricity Generating Board and latterly, with three oil companies. He has worked in the USA, Far East, Middle East and North Africa, emigrating to Provence on retirement. Married with two daughters and five grandchildren, he is now enjoying his vintage years in his native Cornwall, writing.
