Autorenporträt
I grew up on a small rural farm in southern Michigan. The third child of three, my parents were both in the teaching profession. My dad always wanted to have a farm with many different animals. I guess he felt as if he was denied some kind of experience as a child. The family started with a single goat, which started the goat exhibit at the county fair. We then added sheep, ponies, ducks, chickens, geese, and rabbits. We would raise an occasional steer, but never advanced into the breeding aspect of that species. I suppose the character of Blacky may have been inspired by a certain calf that we raised one year. His name was Billy. I was to take care of this calf, from the time he was two days old. Billy was more like a pet dog, that is until he weighed over 800 pounds. Due to this way of life, I built a house on wooded rural property, rather than a subdivision life style. This life experience allowed me to grow to respect life and how much involved caring for animals really was. My dad remained on the farm, and was able to share this life style with my daughter. My daughter Jessica, grew up listening to Blacky the Cow stories. Sitting on my dad's lap and then mine, she would ask and eagerly listen to what adventures Blacky and her friends would take. Writing this story truly is fulfilling.
