Andrew Lang FBA (31 March 1844 - 20 July 1912) was a Scottish poet, writer, literary critic, and anthropologist. He is primarily known for amassing folk and fairy stories. Andrew Lang lectures are named after him at the University of St Andrews. Lang was born in Selkirk, Scottish Borders, in 1844. He was the eldest of eight children born to John Lang, the Selkirk town clerk, and his wife Jane Plenderleath Sellar, the daughter of Patrick Sellar, the first Duke of Sutherland's factor. On April 17, 1875, he married Leonora Blanche Alleyne, the youngest daughter of Clifton and Barbados businessman C. T. Alleyne. Lang's Color/Rainbow Fairy Books, which he edited, were alternately credited to her as author, collaborator, or translator.
