The ensemble of buildings of the shipping company Hamburg Süd, including one of the first high-rises on the newly created Ost-West-Straße, was planned from 1956 onwards, but not completed until early 1965. Designed and developed by Cäsar Pinnau along the lines of American models and guiding principles of rationalized office organization, the project represents one of the most elegant architectural solutions in a period of reconstruction characterized more by plainness. In 2016 the three landmark buildings, together with a neighboring newbuild, will resume operation as Hamburg Süd’s corporate headquarters following elaborate comprehensive rehabilitation.
