This is the first English translation of a Dalai Lama's biography, and is highly significant for the historical study of the Gaden Phodrang period, around the turn of the seventeenth century. It is not only a biography, but a historical narrative of a legendary character, and illustrates the nature and understanding of Tibetan hagiographical and mystical literature within a sociopolitical context.
