Autorenporträt
Thucydides, born around 460 BC in Halimous, Athens, was an esteemed historian and general of ancient Greece. His father, Olorus, had connections to Thrace, suggesting a lineage tied to the region's royalty. Thucydides owned gold mines in Thrace, which contributed to his family's wealth and influence.During the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides served as a general for Athens. In 424 BC, he was dispatched to defend Amphipolis but failed to prevent its capture by Spartan forces, leading to his exile. This 20-year banishment allowed him to observe the war from both Athenian and Spartan perspectives, enriching his historical accounts.Thucydides is best known for his work, The History of the Peloponnesian War, which provides a detailed chronicle of the conflict between Athens and Sparta up to 411 BC. His approach emphasized factual accuracy and impartiality, avoiding mythological explanations. Thucydides' analytical style has earned him recognition as a pioneer of scientific history and political realism.
