Among the different understandings of the Spirit in the New Testament, Pauls understanding stands out for being at once dynamic and sometimes impersonalinviting comparison with the Stoic understanding of spirit (pneuma) as a substance. Volker Rabens reexamines Pauls statements about the Spirit in the widest possible context and argues that the comparison with Stoic conceptions is misguided. Paul understands the Spirit relationally, Volker argues, and it is through relationship that the Spirit empowers the transformed life.
