This set of sermons was delivered by St. John Chrysostom (347 - 407), when, most likely, he was a priest in Antioch, which at the time was under the rule of the Byzantine empire. John Chrysostom is regarded as a saint both in the Catholic Western church and in the East where he is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (along with Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus). He would later go on to become the archbishop of Constantinople. However, when his sermons were ill-received by the empress he was marched to his untimely death. The text for this book comes from the larger work, "The homilies of S. John Chrysostom on the Gospel of St. John, by St. John Chrysostom (d. 407), edited by Philip Schaff (1819-1893), Oxford, J. Parker, 1848-1852." Illustrations have been added to this text from the people and Gospel events referred to in the sermons.
