His debut as a novelist was marked by ""The Wreck of the Grosvenor"" (1877), which became immensely popular and established him as a leading writer of sea stories. Russell's writing is characterized by its vivid and realistic portrayal of nautical life. His works influenced later writers and continue to be appreciated for their storytelling and historical value.
