This book discusses the challenging issue of the impact of development projects implemented by local non-governmental organisations on the living conditions of families in Congo. While some African governments, with the support of international organisations, strive to address the issue of poverty by developing macroeconomic and social policies, Non Governmental Organisations and grassroots deveopment organisations are more and more involved in direct support to poor people who are developing local development initiatives to improve their living conditions. Two methods utilised are: descriptive research with qualitative and quantitative analysis, and case studies. Data have helped to establish the actual situation of development work conducted by local NGO. Based on four evaluation case studies related to integrated development projects, health projects, microcredit and income generating projects in the eastern part of the DRC, the study demonstrates that there is increasing scale of NGO sector, and growing reputation of NGOs are significantly sustaining and improving lives of poor families in the DRC even if their contribution to development on a global level remains limited.
