Motivational training is a phenomenon of the late
twentieth century. It originated in the United
States of America and has grown in popularity in the
United Kingdom. Recently it has been used by many
government funded organisations with the aim of
raising individuals'' aspirations, widening
participation in learning, diminishing social
exclusion and playing a part in economic
regeneration.
There is little published literature on the impact
of motivational training. This study critically
examines the issues involved in evaluating such
training. The complexities of designing a valid,
reliable and practical methodology to successfully
evaluate motivational training courses and the
difficulties encountered in implementing a
methodology.
The study concludes, that given the importance
placed on soft skills by employers and
politicians, a large scale evaluation into the
impact of ''soft skills training'' would be valuable.
If motivational training is embraced as a catalyst
to encourage achievement, development of quality,
delivery and dissemination of good practice are of
paramount importance.
