Poor diet quality is a problem that has been plaguing America for many years and research shows that this problem exist in children, adolescents, adults and the elderly (1-3). Research looking at diet quality data have shown that individuals who do not follow healthy eating guidelines based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) generally have poorer health outcomes compared to individuals who adhere to these guidelines (4). It is well established in the literature that poor diet quality increases the risk for obesity, and several diet-related chronic diseases, namely, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancers (5-7). Chronic diseases incur significant health and economic cost in the US (8), however, a preponderance of evidence show associations between improving diet quality and reduction in risk for chronic diseases (6,7). Research shows that Americans' dietary intake fall with the "needs improvement" category (9). Additionally, one study saw that even when certain people knew what to eat, they still choose not to follow through with eating healthier (10). In Australia as well as North American, there seems to be a disconnect between knowing what to eat and actually following through , but this could be due to not knowing where to begin with creating a healthier diet (11,12).
