Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 80/100, University of Haifa, course: Geopolitics, language: English, abstract: On December 1991, Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine declared the contract about theestablishment of the USSR as null and void and resolved the establishment of the CIS(Commonwealth of Independent States). The collapse of the Soviet Union was a far-ranginggeopolitical event, because it resulted in a new political map on the territorial of the geographicbiggest state of the world. The central Asian republics, which established in this procedure, werehardly prepared for their independence because they have had nothing more than administrativeunits inside of the USSR; their leaders had to absolve a "crash course in nation building". Byconsolidation of states sovereignty, formation of national identities, constitution of politicalinstitutions and the establishment of efficient economic structures these countries had to build upseveral parallel evolutionary steps and processes, that were achieved step by step and about along period in Western states.This situation caused enormous challenges, such as an enormous potential for tension andconflicts. This article takes the escalation of the Caucasian War on Georgian Territory, that tookplace five days in August 2008, as an example for the analyzation of the political coherence.Thereby the paper puts a focus in the country of Kazakhstan. The country of Kazakhstan will bepresented in the first chapter and in the next chapter a short introduction into the Caucasian warand its background. The essay will provide an event analysis of the war and its factors andidentifications of obvious and concealed vital interests of states and big powers. In chapter 5 thearticle then addresses the impact of the events around the Caucasian war on the long-term foreignpolicy of Kazakhstan.
