Digital cities are emerging as an alternative way of enhancing the territory to complement the organization of real cities. In Brazil, the Ministry of Communication's Digital Cities project seeks to create the means for citizens to access, use, produce and disseminate information and knowledge in order to participate effectively and critically in the information society. The main objectives of this book are to analyze the social, economic, political and cultural impacts of the creation of digital cities in the territory of the cities covered by the Ministry of Communication's Digital Cities Pilot Program and the PAC 2 public policy in Rio de Janeiro in 2013; and to verify initiatives implemented by other policies in the context of systems of objects and practices that represent the process of digital inclusion as a prerequisite for the exercise of citizenship within socio-spatial contradictions.
