An investigation of a perceived relationship
between substance abuse programs and graduation
success rates for 4 year institutions participating
in division 1A student-athletics during the 2004-
2005 school year. Prior quality research looks at
other factors to predict graduation. The purpose is
to determine if school graduation success rates are
higher for student-athletes where the institution
delivers a substance abuse program.
Descriptive case-study single-subject
research methodology is used to identify how
substance abuse programs affect graduation success
rates. Data is collected from archives found on
official university websites. Universities are
identified by NCAA statistical reports for being in
the top 10 or bottom graduation success rate for the
2004-2005 academic year. 20 institutions make up the
case study analysis. Data collection comes from the
following variables: 1) existence of substance abuse
program; 2) type of substance abuse Program; 3)
nature of substance abuse program, and 4)
effectiveness of substance abuse program.
