This study analyzed the impact of parental mental illness on children based on the perceptions/experiences of therapists. The methodology included a quantitative survey of 37 likert scale questions developed to assess therapist s perceptions of the impact of parental mental illness on children. Sample size in this study included 33 LICSW's in the state of MN. Respondents were found based on a list provided by the Minnesota Board of Social Work. The majority of respondents in the study agreed children are impacted in a variety of ways by parental mental illness. Children whose parents have mental illness are at risk of developing emotional and mental health difficulties. The respondents identified there is a need to focus on the family and network with other agencies to best provide services for these families. It is important to assess the severity of the mental illness as well as the response to treatment if provided. Mental health education is also an important part of service provision.
