This book is based on the perceptions and
experiences of men who saw their partners going
through post natal depression.Post natal depression
is an psychiatric disease experienced by some women
after the birth of a baby. This disease is not often
discussed in the community.An explanation
of the disease is given that points out the
differences between the baby blues , postnatal
depression and postnatal psychosis. The causes for
the illness and the existing symptoms are
explained.Attention is given to the various methods
of intervention.Opinions is given by men in an
existing support group. They comment on the way the
disease affected their relationship with their
partners, babies and extended families and which
adjustments they had to make to accommodate the
family.Emotions is described in respect to the
circumstances and the treatment available.Social
workers are faced with a great challenge where post
natal depression is concerned. Ideally this illness
should be prevented, otherwise correct treatment is
essential to prevent breakdown of families. The
primary aim of any community is to establish and
maintain healthy family structures.
