This research investigates the role in which the informal sector plays in the economic development of Nigeria. The role is assessed through the examination of living standards, which is measured on the basis of income and financial freedom. For a more in-depth analysis, the research focuses on three key areas: employment, gender equality and tax evasion. Employment is examined looking at the effect the informal sector has in creating jobs, the role of employment in the informal sector is also assessed looking at the part it plays in empowering women financially. Lastly, the relationship between the informal sector, tax evasion and development is analysed to evaluated the claim that the informal sector leads to development.
