1875. Scottish philosopher Ferrier's most notable book, the Institutes of Metaphysic, denied the absolute existence of matter and maintained instead that mind and matter necessarily coexist in all experience. His work is regarded as laying the foundations of the British Idealist movement, which developed the work of German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
