As you get older, the chances go up that something big, like a stroke or cancer, will drag down your quality of life. Well known healthy options, like eating coloured plants, and exercising, suppress big diseases. In large part they work by keeping the immune system in balance. A further option in the longevity, anti-inflammatory tool kit, and a major theme of this book, is the developing science of 'functional food'. Functional foods, also known as nutraceuticals (and bioactives, and super foods) are foods, and edible novelties, like leaves and seeds, that are almost drug-like in their capacity to suppress inflammation. Roderick Mulgan has been a doctor for a quarter century and is a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Over the last decade he has developed a multi-doctor practice that services aged-care facilities. His aged-care work has led to an interest in the effect of lifestyle choices on well-being and in particular - unusual among mainstream doctors - the evidence that novel foods and supplements promote long-term health. With barrister Stephen Iorns he has founded LifeGuard Health®, which markets LifeGuard Essentials®, a supplement that delivers several of the nutraceuticals outlined in this book. Stephen has both professional and personal interests in health and nutrition. Dr Mulgan is also a practising barrister, and met Stephen at Victoria University School of Law.
