Der Kanadier David Gibbins, Jg. 1962, studierte Archäologie an der University of Cambridge, bevor er 1999 an der University of Texas den Lehrstuhl für Nautische Archäologie übernahm. Dort spezialisierte Gibbins sich auf 'Maritime Archäologie' und leitete mehrere Expeditionen im Mittelmeergebiet, insbesondere vor den Küsten Siziliens, Tunesiens und vor der türkischen Schwarzmeerküste.
