James Fenimore Cooper (1789?1851) was a prolific and popular nineteenth century American writer who wrote historical fiction of frontier and Native American life. He is best remembered for the Leatherstocking Tales, one of which was The Last of the Mohicans. N.C. Wyeth (1882?1945) began his artistic career as a young adult. Born in Needham, Massachusetts, Wyeth traveled the American West extensively and drew what he saw. His prolific career includes three thousand works and more than one hundred book illustrations, including those for a majority of the Scribner Illustrated Classics series.

„Genau in diesem Moment, als der Leib seines Feindes ganz zusammengeballt war, hob sich die bebende Waffe des Kundschafters an seine Schulter.“ Dann folgt jener Schuss, der vom Bösen, dem Huronenhäuptling Magua, befreit und doch keine Erlösung bringt, weil der Held, „der letzte Mohikaner“, der edle Wilde Uncas bereits tot ist. Und auch die feurige Cora, die einzige wirklich attraktive, sogar erotische Frauengestalt im Lederstrumpf-Zyklus von James Fenimore Cooper. Der „Mohikaner“, 1826 erschienen, wurde Coopers größter Erfolg, auch in Europa und bis heute. Uncas, der Mohikaner, sein Vater Chingachgook und ihr Freund Falkenauge gehören zum Unsterblichen der Weltliteratur genauso wie jene so intensiv beschriebenen Landschaften eines noch im besten Sinn archaisch jungen Amerika.
