Geboren am 16.9.1834 in Quedlinburg; gestorben am 3.6.1910 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
Der Sohn eines Tuchfabrikanten besuchte das Gymnasium in Quedlinburg. Nach dem Studium der Philosophie und Wirtschaftswissenschaften in Berlin und mehreren Bildungsreisen übernahm er das väterliche Geschäft, gab es aber nach finanziellen Verlusten 1869 auf zugunsten der von ihm gegründeten Quedlinburger "Harz-Zeitung". Für seine Teilnahme am Krieg gegen Frankreich 1870/71 als Landwehroffizier vor Toul wurde er ausgezeichnet. 1872 ließ er sich als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin nieder. 1884 wurde er Ehrenbürger von Hameln; 1904 erhielt er den Professorentitel.
