The Letters of the Younger Pliny
Pliny the Younger, born around 61 AD in Novum Comum (modern-day Como, Italy), was a Roman lawyer, author, and magistrate. Orphaned young, he was adopted by his uncle, Pliny the Elder, a famous naturalist. Under his uncle's guidance, he received a strong education in rhetoric and literature. He held various public offices, rising through the Roman political ranks. Serving as consul in 100 AD, he later became governor of Bithynia-Pontus, where he corresponded with Emperor Trajan. His letters from this period provide rare insights into Roman law and administration.Pliny is best known for his letters, which capture Roman society and politics in the 1st century AD. His writings include a firsthand account of Mount Vesuvius's eruption and early references to Christians. These letters remain valuable historical records of life in ancient Rome.
