When she was only twenty-five, Holly Hurd was featured in Fortune’s “People to Watch” column for creating her own hedge fund at a young age. Her father, a venerable entrepreneur, gave Holly the tools for working for herself. She began trading at age twelve and had a successful career in the managed futures industry including managing her own hedge fund. In 2010, Holly started VentureMom.com, a platform to share the start-up stories of women entrepreneurs. The tag line of her platform, "Your Business is Your Baby," speaks to the fact that anyone who puts their self-created business out into the world feels like it’s their baby, hence the name VentureMom: you are the mom of your business. Holly has profiled over 400 women who have started businesses out of thin air. Whether it’s a granola bar, a gluten-free cookie or a tomato sauce that’s now found in Whole Foods, or a handbag, belt buckle or straw hat seen in boutiques across the country or a sleep expert, college counselor or dog trainer working with clients, Holly has profiled these women in her newsletter, blog and on her social media. Her stories are seen by tens of thousands of followers each week. Holly published her book, VentureMom: From Idea to Income in Just 12 Weeks to rave reviews. It details the startup plan that she has learned from the women she’s interviewed over the last 13 years. The first section offers ideas and exercises showing the reader how to come up with the perfect venture. The second section shares how to get organized with a name, a website, and a logo.
