In the first volume of his biography, Sereke Welat tells about his childhood and youth in Kurdistan (Northern Syria). On the first day at school Sereke was faced with a language that was foreign to him (Arabic) and a new culture, which were shocking impressions for him due to beatings and punishment from the Arab teacher, which he still cannot understand to this day. Over the course of the following school years he gradually discovered that the Arab school system was completely dominated by racism and the strict rules of religion. This made his longing and desire for peace and freedom even stronger and he was determined to defend himself against such injustices. For him, arriving in Germany was like the fulfillment of a dream: Laws, freedom, democracy! The young Kurd breathed freedom for the first time in Germany. Sereke¿s story offers an interesting insight into Kurdish culture and the difficult situation of his people and is not only interesting for Kurds themselves.
