His many deals with American life depict a provincial approach in the American states, the horror of slave work, and the lives of American Indians ``Captain," Reid composed adventure books likened to those by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson and set in the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. He was a fan of Master Byron. His novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed locations.
