Autorenporträt
Virginia Hustvedt Hauck (1913-1989) was born in Decorah, Iowa, the home of her father's parents. Because her father was a naval officer she lived in many different places as she grew up, including two years on Oahu, Hawaii, the birth place and childhood home of her mother. Virginia was an imaginative child who enjoyed making up stories, drawing pictures, and writing poems, some of which were published in the children's magazine, St. Nicholas. She attended the Corcoran School of Art briefly before marrying naval officer Philip Hauck in 1937. They had three children. While Washington D. C. often served as a home base for the peripatetic family, Virginia eventually settled in Winchester, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. As an adult she continued to write and paint.
