Whitney L. Woods, Ph.D., is a former journalism and language arts educator and administrator in the Detroit (MI) Public Schools. He also served as member, and later Board Chair of Nsoroma Institute, a K-8 Public School Academy in Oakland County, Michigan. At Nsoroma, Woods was in the Baba's Club, men in the school community who provided structure, guidance and leadership for the boys at this institution. The work continued as he presented at males-only forums throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Before a tenure spanning four decades as a professional educator, Woods was fortunate to be able to combine relevant public service and meaningful work experiences during each level of his postsecondary training. He wrote more than 100 articles for collegiate and professional newspapers while pursuing an undergraduate degree in journalism at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Internships at a local radio and television station rounded out his collegiate journalism career. As a Master of Arts in Teaching Candidate at Wayne State University, Woods was selected to do his student teaching in the Horizons Upward Bound Summer Program. This internship drew at-risk high school students from the metropolitan Detroit area, and was held at the Cranbrook International Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. A doctorate in educational administration at Michigan State University followed. At MSU, Woods was a participant and facilitator in initiatives with the National Center for Research on Teacher Learning, and the Michigan and United States' Departments of Education, in addition to being a Student Teaching Supervisor for undergraduate education majors placed in districts in Mid and Southeastern Michigan. Besides reading and writing, Woods, an athlete himself, is an avid fan of competitive sports at all levels. This essay is an extension of the coaching he does with his mentees, who are now grown, and the next generation of men implementing the Code in their respective fields, homes, and communities.
