The Man-Nature Relationship: A Study of the Western Environmental Ethics Abstract In this work, I have made an attempt to discuss the relationship between man and nature in the western environmental ethics. We all know that there is a close relationship between man and nature. But in practice, we are not maintaining this relationship properly. Human beings and non-human beings parallelly exist in this world. But human beings think that non-humans exist only for the benefit of them and by using nonhumans they are living an enjoyable life without any hesitation. Human beings think that only they are coming under moral consideration due to their unique features and the rest of all are considered as a means to fulfill human desires. The dominant attitude of human beings towards nature is the prime cause for the environmental crisis that the world is facing today. The present scenario of environmental problems has attracted the attention of philosophers to review the idea of freedom of human beings in terms of action concerning to environment as a whole. Time has come to understand properly human beings' intimate relationship with nature. Until and unless human beings understand properly the relationship between man and nature, it may not be possible to find out an appropriate solution to environmental problems. The important role of philosophy in general and of ethics, in particular, lies in re-evaluating the man-nature relationship and human beings' freedom and responsibility towards nature. Some of the pertinent questions which I have dealt with in this work are.
