May and Pammy are two young girls from very different backgrounds. After surviving the Plymouth Blitz, at the end of World War II, they find themselves at the same Convent school where the orphaned May is the only boarder in the care of the nuns. May's French background puts her in a position to help Pammy with her lessons. When May reaches the age to leave school Pammy's parents offer May a home and help her to begin training as a nurse, but, May's obsessive jealousy of the love Pammy shares with her family causes problems with serious consequences.
