L'autore si è laureato all'Università di Leeds (Regno Unito), conseguendo un master (MPH) nel 1999, e ha lavorato per molti anni nel settore sanitario, accumulando molte esperienze in questo campo. Ha servito il suo Paese (l'Eritrea) come direttore delle risorse umane del Ministero della Salute per molti anni e ha lavorato anche come direttore medico provinciale.
