Arthur and Asahel embark on a happy search after treasure in an old mine. The physical darkness makes them aware of their spiritual darkness as they go exploring. Asahel is a Jew and knows Old Testament history, while Arthur thinks himself a Christian but his heart does not embrace it. Arthur proclaims "You had love without knowledge; I knowledge without love. Yours was ignorance-mine was sin!"

Autorenporträt
Charlotte Maria Tucker (1821-1883) was born in Barnet, England. Her gift of teaching appeared in her first book, "The Claremont Tales," which illustrates the Beatitudes, and her pen name became A.L.O.E. (A Lady of England). Her brothers moved to India, but she remained at her childhood home for 49 years, when in 1869, her mother died and she took up the study of Hindustani. In 1875, she felt a divine call to travel to India where she stayed for 18 years. She carried on the missionary work of teaching Indian women and children and writing stories until her death.
