In a small Welsh valley, former miner Johnny 'the Cutter' Morgan strikes coal under his allotment shed and opens a clandestine mine to provide work for the young 'wasters' of his village, in the hope they'll wise up and abandon their antisocial ways. At every turn, Johnny and his tiny secret colliery face ruinous discovery from prying allotment tenants, retired never-off-duty police officers, blabbing veteran miners, a stalking coal merchant, and a band of militant climate activists. Can Johnny resurrect coal mining in his community without the whole world and his dog knowing, and without igniting mayhem reminiscent of the 1984-85 Miners' Strike?
