Joan Zaretsky is a retired teacher who has written on educational issues and worked in many roles in the education system throughout her career. While earning her master's degree and PhD, she wrote and presented research papers across Canada and the United States. In 2010, her doctoral dissertation, Perspectives of Northern Manitoba Principals Regarding New Special Education Legislation, won the Thomas B. Greenfield Award for the best written dissertation in Canada in the area of Educational Administration. Though retired, she stays active and involved in her community and education. She is an instructor at the University of Winnipeg and on the board of directors for her local church, among other projects. Joan lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband Richard, and enjoys time with her four stepchildren and five step-grandchildren, who keep her youthful and energized. Though she has written numerous research-based projects, The Missing Puzzle Pieces: Finding My Birth Family is Joan's first time writing a book from her heart, rather than her head.
