Stanley Lane-Poole (1854-1931) was a British orientalist, archaeologist, and numismatist, best known for his scholarly work on the history of the Middle East and the Islamic world. Born on December 18, 1854, in London, he was the grandson of poet and translator Edward William Lane, who instilled in him an early interest in Eastern cultures. Educated at Trinity College, Oxford, Lane-Poole specialized in Arabic studies and embarked on a career that combined academic research, excavation, and writing. Much of his work focused on documenting the history and influence of Islamic civilization. His nuanced understanding of Middle Eastern history and culture culminated in several important works.
