Walter Bates (1760-1842) was a Connecticut Loyalist who came to New Brunswick at the end of the American Revolutionary War. As sheriff of Kings County, he was in charge of capturing the most notorious con man of the early 19th century. His memoir became the first Canadian bestseller.
