The history of the relationship between the characters of William Faulkner and Carson McCullers is one of violent despair, rage and frustration, which erupt everywhere in the novels. All these states of mind find their justification in the will of the individuals to follow simultaneously two paths which start from two desires: that of escape or solitude. Moreover, the humanism which expresses itself through the works and the speeches is not, that of the light and the happiness to be. But rather that, anguished, of the heart of the man in fight with himself in front of the threat of the crushing or the alienation of this last one by the society. This clash between society and man ends either in the victory of society, or in the dissolution of the individual lost by his own victory in society. Caught in this last condition, the individual manages to maintain his integrity only in a stoic introversion where he discovers the infinite dimension of the lucid and free consciousness. From then on, the individuality of the novelistic character is discovered at the same time as a separation and as an infinity.
