Anyone who is familiar with the cultural activities carried out by the Navy knows how important maritime history is for the institution and the people who serve in it. They also know that it is difficult to find another organization in Portugal that has contributed so much to this branch of history. That's why when people talk about maritime history in our country (and elsewhere), the name of the Navy inevitably comes up. Hence the relevance of studying the historiographical activity developed within it, knowing that this will ultimately reflect the evolution of Portuguese maritime historiography itself. At a time when the Navy's opening up to the academic world seems to have been definitively achieved - namely through the consolidation of the Master's Degree in Maritime History and the activity of the Naval Research Center (more recent milestones) - there is no doubt that a balance and a state of play are justified, which is what we are trying to do in this book.
