As a former history teacher, I taught my students the importance of not repeating mistakes. What you learn from other people's mistakes will save you a lot of grief in your lifetime. Studying the reasons for nations going to war or why economic depressions occur, didn't seem relevant at the time, but now these boring lessons are all too real. Our country is as polarized as it was before the Civil War. We are a nation in gridlock.
