The modern-day suburb began in 19th century Britain. As suburbia spread, the â New Womanâ arose and fin-de-siecle concerns grew, suburban men felt increasingly besieged. This study traces themes of suburban masculinity in popular genres - speculative fiction, comic fiction and detective fiction - and in literary works from 1880 to 1914.
