This book is a biography of the life of the author's grandfather, William K. Gunderson Sr. He was in part a brutal and cruel man, but also capable of moments of kindness. Growing up in the streets of 1940s-era Brooklyn, he eventually married the author's Italian American grandmother and had three sons together. In addition to being the son of a Norwegian immigrant and a Maine-born Irish lass, the author's grandfather had a very complicated family life that played a part in making him the man that he became. This story has a lot to it and connects with American history as well as Italian and Irish/French Canadian histories respectively. There is a genealogical aspect to the book as well that those interested in their own family trees might like to observe and take note of.
