From the 1850s on, Lutheranism among Norwegian Americans enjoyed harmony and prosperity. The decades between 1880 and 1918, however, were harsh and wrought with doctrinal strife. Bjug Harstad, the first president of the reorganized Norwegian synod, fought against foe and friend alike to maintain the truth. Featuring such historical figures as F. A. Schmidt, C. F. W. Walther, H. G. Stub, and U. V. Koren, 'The Oak Trees Still Stand' is a play that follows Harstad as he navigates through one of the most pivotal periods in the history of Lutheranism in America.
