The purpose of this book is to place the Heathen Mythology in two points of view: first, as it would have struck a Traveler in Greece, who wished to form a just conception of the Religion of the country, free from either favor or prejudice; secondly, regarding Mythology as the introduction and handmaid to the study of Poetry, the author has endeavored to feel his subject in the spirit of a poet, and to communicate that feeling to others.
