Autorenporträt
Oliver Herford (1863–1935) was an Anglo-American writer, poet, and illustrator, often called America's answer to Oscar Wilde for his wit and pithy aphorisms. Born in Sheffield, England, he moved to the United States with his family at the age of six and later attended the Art Students League of New York and subsequently studied in London. Herford was known for his simple and precise literary style, which was featured across a versatile array of works, including poems, plays, and satirical pieces. He is perhaps best remembered for his books for children. Among his notable works is 'The Peter Pan Alphabet' (1907), a whimsical exploration of the characters in J.M. Barrie's beloved tale, showcasing Herford's skill in marrying text and illustration to captivate the imaginations of young readers. A prolific author, Herford penned over fifty books, contributing not only to his legacy as an illustrator and humorist but also as an influential figure in children's literature. His charming verses and droll drawings have delighted generations and continue to be appreciated for their playful elegance and timeless appeal.
