This book intends to provide a brief historical background of Philippine music, a biography of Kasilag describing her work and accomplishments, a list of her compositions and her contributions as a composer in today s musical world, along with detailed analyses of selected piano works for its sound, texture, harmony, melody, rhythm and form, and Western and Eastern influences reflecting classic and romantic orientation with some use of twentieth-century techniques. The selected piano works include April Morning (Fantasie Tone-Poem) (1941), Theme and Variations (based on a Filipino folk tune Walay Angay ) (1950) and Elegy on Mt. Pinatubo (1991), which were chosen to extend knowledge of Kasilag s piano works and its compositional style, and to promote interest in their performance to the academic and performance community.

Dr. Caroline Besana Salido has a B.M.-Wright State University, M.M.-University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and D.M.A.-The Ohio State University, all in the discipline of piano performance. Dr. Salido serves on the Piano Faculty at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, and teaches piano at The Piano Arts Studio.
